Being a prominent airline of Alaska, the airline always ensures convenience and safe travel for all passengers, especially for the kids traveling alone. That said, the airline has also designed an Alaska Airlines Unaccompanied minor policy keeping in mind the best interests of little ones. Below are the important guidelines of the policy, which every parent must follow for seamless travel of their child.

Alaska Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Rules 

Alaska Airlines says that each parent must follow certain rules and must pay the levied fee, in order to allow hassle-free travel for their child. Check out the guidelines of Alaska Airlines unaccompanied minor regulation and understand the important steps you must follow before and after the arrival of your kid. 

  • Known as Junior Jetsetters, the airline’s unaccompanied minor program is available for children between 5-17 years of age, both on domestic and international flights.
  • The program is mandatory for children ages 5 to 12. However, kids aged 13 to 17, the service is optional. 
  • Children below 5 years are not allowed to travel unless they’re accompanied by an adult of age 18 and above.
  • While your child is in the airline’s care, they will be supervised at all times; it is expected that they will follow directions given by our agents and flight attendants.
  • To ensure your child is able to travel, please allow an additional 90 minutes to check in all children traveling alone.
  • All  procedures for travel of unaccompanied minors(e.g. paperwork completed, fees paid, gate passes issued) must be completed in advance of our standard check-in cut-off times.
  • Children may not travel alone to or from Sun Valley, Idaho between December 1, and April 1, annually.

Alaska Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Program Details 

  • For the safety and security of children traveling without an adult, Alaska Airlines limits the number of unaccompanied minors on each flight.
  • An unaccompanied minor fee will be charged, depending on your kid’s age whether 5, 8 or 12.
  • For your child’s safety, proof of age (such as a birth certificate or passport) may be requested upon check-in at the airport.
  • As per Alaska Airlines unaccompanied minor policy, the airline will not accept child guests if weather or other factors are likely to interrupt the flight’s operation.
  • In the event of an unplanned interruption in travel, the guardian will be required to give approval for rebooking.
  • If a child guest becomes ill, every attempt will be made to contact at least one of the guardians. If a child guest becomes seriously ill, the appropriate medical personnel will be contacted.
  • The child guest will be allowed to make phone calls to a guardian while their flight is on the ground. 
  • Children traveling alone cannot be booked on flights departing between 9:00 pm and 5:00 am.
  • Alaska Airlines has launched a free mobile app, “FLY for All”, designed for unaccompanied minors, to ease the anxiety of air travel. The app walks these guests through the steps they’ll follow when getting ready to fly. 

Unaccompanied Minor Travel Guide

There are certain rules for carriage of an unaccompanied minor on Alaska Airlines aircrafts. All kids under 13 who are traveling alone, will be taken under the protection of the airline until they reach their destination. All the parents / guardians are expected to comply with airline’s rules for dropping and picking up the kid. Below is the additional checklist for carriage of minors. 

How to book 

Booking Online

  • Visit Alaska Airlines official page to book a flight.
  • Enter all the details of your kid and move to the checkout page. 
  • Follow the on-screen prompts, select your child’s flight and seat, and pay
  • Pay the unaccompanied minor fee and the standard cost of the flight.

*At the time of travel, the child passenger must be between the ages of 5 and 17 years old.

Getting Ready 

  • If your child is traveling internationally, visit the destination state’s government page to see if a letter of consent is required for entrance or exit. Check the status of your child’s flight and weather conditions on the official website of Alaska Airlines.
  • Pack a carry-on bag for your child with toys / games, any necessary medications, and snacks. Ensure that your child also has eaten a meal prior to the flight.
  • Provide your child with a debit or credit card for inflight purchases, since cash is not accepted onboard.
  • Also provide your child with a cell phone or prepaid phone card and important phone numbers, so they can contact you or someone else if needed en-route.

Boarding and drop-off 

  • Arrive at least 90 minutes prior to departure for domestic and 2 hours for international flights.
  • Notify a customer service agent at the ticket counter that the child is a Junior Jetsetter, in accordance with Alaska Airlines unaccompanied minor policy.
  • Complete the guardian contact form.
  • You will need the names and phone numbers of the guardians that will be picking up and dropping off the child passenger. 
  • Children using the Alaska Airlines’ Junior Jetsetter service will only be released to adults with valid photo I.D. who are listed on the guardian contact form. 
  • Notify the customer service agent if a friend or family member will be meeting the child passenger(s).
  • Sign the guardian contact form, acknowledging that you agree to the request for carriage and have read and understood the rules for children traveling alone.
  • Obtain an escort pass from the ticket counter so that you can escort the child passenger to the gate. 
  • Report to the gate with the child passenger at least 40 minutes prior to departure.
  • Introduce the child passenger to the gate agent.
  • Remain at the airport until a customer service agent has confirmed that the child passenger’s flight has departed.

Pick up 

  • In order to facilitate the handover of the unaccompanied minor between the designated parties, the greeting parents and guardians should arrive at the gate 45 minutes prior to scheduled arrival.
  • A guardian listed on the guardian contact form, must present a valid photo I.D. to obtain an escort pass for meeting a child passenger at the gate.
  • The Unaccompanied Minor will be escorted from the plane and to meet the designated parent or guardian, in accordance with Alaska Airlines unaccompanied minor policy.

Alaska Airlines unaccompanied minor fees

  • The Unaccompanied Minors service fees will be waived for children with MVP®, MVP® Gold, or Gold 75K Mileage Plan status.
  • The Alaska Airlines Unaccompanied minor fees for Junior Jetsetters can be paid during web check-in, at a check-in kiosk, or at any Alaska Airlines airport ticket counter.
  • The Mexico stations of Alaska Airlines do not accept cash in US dollars as payment for tickets and fees. Only Mexican Pesos or a credit / debit card will be accepted.
