Economy Class Allowance
In Economy class, the number of checked bags you can bring depends on your destination and ticket type. However, if you are bringing extra luggage, you can always purchase extra bags during or after booking.
- No checked baggage will be allowed to Light ticket holders.
- Standard or Flex ticket holders are allowed to bring 1 item of checked baggage up to 158 cm, including handles and wheels and with a maximum weight of 23 kg.
- On some routes, you can bring 1 additional checked bag on top of the regular allowance.
Business Class Allowance
- You are allowed to bring 2 items of checked baggage with a maximum size of 158cm, including handles and wheels.
- Your checked baggage must not exceed 32 kg.
Premium Comfort Class Allowance
- Premium Comfort Class passengers are allowed to bring 2 items of checked baggage.
- Each bag must not exceed a maximum size of 158 cm, including handles and wheels.
- Your checked baggage must not exceed up to 23 kg.
Checked Baggage For Babies
- If you have purchased a seat for your kid, then the baggage allowance will depend on their ticket type.
- If you have purchased a ticket type that includes checked baggage, then you are entitled to bring 1 checked baggage of 10 kg for your infant.
Irregular Size or Packed Baggage
The airline will reject your luggage, if the packing or shape causes damage or blocks the baggage handling system. Ball shaped luggage or baggage packed with cling film that’s meant for food packaging.
KLM Special Baggage Allowance
KLM allows its passengers to bring different kinds of special baggage with you on your KLM flight. Sports Equipment
- Bicycle
You can bring your bicycle or tandem on your KLM flight. However, you may have to pay a fee for that. Furthermore, you need to make the reservation in advance, but no later than 48 hours before departure. The bike should have a maximum weight of 23 kg and a maximum size of 300 cm. You can bring electric bicycles only if you have removed its batteries.
- Golfing Equipment
Only Standard or Flex ticket holders are allowed to bring Golfing equipment, instead of a checked baggage without having to make a reservation. It can be up to 300 cm and up to 23 kg in Economy Class and Premium Comfort Class or 32 kg in Business Class. The golf set consists of clubs, balls, and a pair of golf shoes. Light ticket holders need to pay a fee to check in your golfing equipment.
Flying Blue Members are allowed to bring 1 golf bag, containing 1 golf equipment, with a maximum weight of 23 kg on top of your standard checked baggage allowance.
- Skis and Snowboards
KLM allows its passengers to bring skis or snowboard equipment instead of an item of checked baggage without having to make a reservation. It can be up to 300 cm and up to 23 kg in Economy Class and Premium Comfort Class or 32 kg in Business Class. A set of ski equipment can include a pair of skis, a pair of ski poles, and a pair of ski boots. A set of snowboards may consist of a board and a pair of snowboard boots.
- Avalanche Rescue Backpack
KLM allows you to bring one avalanche rescue backpack instead of a hand bag or checked baggage or to pack it in your suitcase. The avalanche rescue backpacks with an explosive trigger mechanism are not allowed on KLM flights.
- Surfing Equipment
KLM allows its passengers to bring surfing equipment instead of an item of checked baggage. Surfing equipment may include wave, boogie, or body. Windsurfing can consist of a board, mast, sail, and boom, which must be packed in a quiver bag. The kitesurfing equipment may include a board and a kite packed in a kite bag.
- Diving Equipment
You can bring your diving equipment instead of a checked baggage. In addition, you will need to make a reservation for the transport. You can bring a wetsuit, vest, socks, mask, shoes, flippers, knife, regulator, and air cylinders. Ensure the air cylinder or scuba tank is empty and the valve is open or removed.
- Fishing Equipment
A set of fishing equipment may consist of rods, a reel, a landing net, a pair of fishing boots, and a fishing tackle box.
- Weapons for Shooting
You are allowed to bring unloaded firearms and ammunition for shooting, instead of a checked baggage. You are also allowed to bring up to 5 kg worth of sports ammunition, a shooting mat, small tools, and hearing protector.
Musical Instrument
KLM allows its passengers to bring musical instruments on board, as hand baggage, checked baggage or transport it on an extra seat, depending on the size and weight. The policies may vary, so here is our guide to musical instruments on board.
As Hand Baggage
- You are allowed to bring a musical instrument along with you if it meets the size of a regular hand baggage item.
- The dimensions should not exceed 55 × 35 × 25 cm and weigh within 12 kg in Economy Class and Premium Comfort Class and 18 kg in Business Class.
- If it meets the above criteria, then you do not have to make any reservation.
Instrument on an Extra Seat
- If the musical instrument weighs up to 45 kg, then you can keep it in an extra seat.
- The maximum allowed dimensions should be within 140 cm.
- If you are flying on an European flight operated by Embraer aircraft, the dimension should be not more than 122 cm.
As Checked Baggage
- You have to pay an excess fee for overweight or oversize baggage if the musical instrument weighs between 32 kg and 45 kg or it is larger than 300 cm.
- You have to make a reservation for the instrument, at least 48 hours before the departure.
Wedding Dress
KLM never does anything to spoil your big day. You are entitled to bring your wedding dress on board with you. If you are flying intercontinental and there’s enough storage space, you can bring it on board with you instead of hand baggage. Ensure, you pack the wedding dress in a clothing bag that meets the regular hand baggage weight and size restrictions.
Urn
You can bring an urn either in your hand baggage or in your checked baggage as long as it is not made of metal. Ensure the urn is sealed and wrapped. You must show the crematorium certificate during the security check at the airport.
Escorting Human Remains
You need to directly contact a specialized funeral director or cargo agent if you need to travel to escort a coffin.
KLM Baggage Policy for Pets
KLM only transports cats and dogs in the cabin and hold. In addition, the number of pets on board depends on the type of aircraft and destination. You must make the reservation in advance and no later than 48 hours before the flight’s scheduled departure. Here is KLM’s guideline to pets on board.
Pets in the Cabin
- The pet should be at least 15 weeks old.
- You can bring only one cat or dog with you, when traveling on Economy Class or when traveling in Business Class within Europe.
- The pet should fit in a closed pet travel bag and or kennel.
- The dimension of the kennel should be within 46 × 28 × 24 cm.
- The pet along with the kennel should not weigh more than 8 kg.
- If you are flying on Premium Comfort Class or on a Business Class on an intercontinental route, then the airline will not accept any pets in the cabin.
Pets in the Hold
- You can bring 3 pets in the hold and they can share the same kennel, if they weigh not more than 75 kg.
- There should be either 2 adult animals of comparable size or 3 animals up to 6 months old from the same litter.
- The combined weight of the animal and the kennel shouldn’t be more than 75 kg.
- The kennel can be maximum 122 × 81 × 89 cm on KLM flights.
- You cannot bring your pet on hold, if you have a transfer time of more than 3 hours or your flight is operated by Boeing 787-9 or 787-10 aircraft.
- Cat breeds that KLM doesn’t allow are- Burmese, Exotic Shorthair, Himalayan, and Persian cats.
- Dog breeds that KLM doesn’t allow are- Boston Terrier, Boxer, Affenpinscher, Brussels Griffon, Bulldog, Cane Corso, Chow Chow, Great Dane, Lhassa Apso, Mastiff, Pekingese, Petit Brabancon, Pug, Shar Pei, Shih Tzu, Spaniel, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
KLM Baggage Fees

- Each piece of check-in baggage must not exceed 23 kg or 32 kg according to the class of travel.
- The dimension of each piece of check-in baggage should be within 158 cm (Height + Length Width).
- Passengers on Economy Class on intercontinental flights from the USA and Canada to Africa, Middle East, and Asia, are allowed to bring 1 item of check-in baggage, with maximum weight of 23 kg and maximum dimension of 158 cm.
- Passengers on Business Class are allowed to bring 2 items of checked-in baggage, with maximum weight of 32 kg and maximum dimension of 158 cm.
Economy Class on the United States, Europe and Canada
- Light ticket holders are allowed 1 piece of hand baggage.
- Standard and Flex ticket holders are allowed to bring 1 piece of hand baggage and 1 piece of check-in baggage.
- If you are a member of Flying Blue Platinum, Silver, and Gold, then you are entitled to bring 1 extra piece of Check-in baggage, with a dimension of 158 cm and should not weigh more than 23 kg. This also applies to all SkyTeam operated flights and Flying Blue Explorer members have the same baggage allowance as regular passengers.
- It also applies to flights between continental Europe and Algeria, Israel, Morocco, and Tunisia.
Special Cases for Economy Class
In some exceptional cases, passengers on Economy Class are allowed to carry a second piece of baggage, which should not weigh more than 23 kg and the size should not exceed 158 cm, free of charge. Here is a list:

KLM Damaged, Lost or Delayed Baggage Policy
If due to mishandle or any other reason the airline loses your bag, or your luggage arrives late, or the baggage is damaged, then KLM Baggage Policy lets you file a complaint and if eligible, you will receive compensation as well.
- If you feel the airline has somehow lost your luggage or you haven’t received your luggage, then you can file a complaint within 48 hours after your arrival.
- You will receive a file reference number, which can help you keep track of your baggage status.
- If somehow your luggage gets damaged during the transport, then you need to file a complaint with the airline and if you are eligible, then you will be compensated.
